Mark A. Overton, Sr. was born March 21, 1959 in Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D. C. Mark was a happy, quiet child who was always loving and smiling. He was the youngest child of the six Overton children. Having grown up in such a full and loving home he was a joy to all the family and neighbors. He attended school in Montgomery County, and was a proud graduate of Montgomery Blair High School.
Mark loved all his family. He was especially proud of his four children (Terrell, Patrice, Kara, and Mark Jr.) and seven grandchildren (Veursace, Kristen, Hailey, Harley, Malcolm, Terrell II, John-Paul II ). It was not uncommon that being friends with Mark became a lifetime commitment. He truly cherished his childhood friends as well as his adult friendships. A third love of Marks was music. Cut on the right type of music and Mark could dance for hours on end. Parliament, Chuck Brown, Rare Essence and The Time were some of his favorite bands to cut a rug to.
Mark’s journey through life was full of kindness, love and laughter. The last few months of his journey were no different. Mark was living in Gaithersburg, MD under the home of his daughter, Patrice, where he was always surrounded by immediate family who happily conceded to his “RIGHT NOW” request.
Mark’s birthday was 7 days before he left this world, a birthday that he made a promise to Patrice that he would see. It was a blessing to have all his family and most of his friends there. Everyone was joyful and sang to Mark. They put some music on, and his feet began to wiggle. We sang and prayed with him, as we thanked God for letting him celebrate his last birthday with all that loved him.
Mark leaves to cherish his everlasting memories: Tammy McKenney (life partner), two sons: Terrell Thornton I (Lauren), Mark, Jr. and two daughters: Patrice Love (John-Paul), Kara Morrison (Lexi). One brother: Philip (Holly). Three sisters: Shelia Barckley (John), Felicia Overton and Marquita Caldwell.
Grandchildren: Veursace Thornton, Kristen Thornton, Hailey-Aunnah Thornton, Harley Thornton, Malcolm-Carter Mejorada, Terrell Thornton II, and John-Paul Mejorada II.
Nephews: Philip J. Overton II, and Myles P. Overton. Nieces: Stephanie Bass, and sisters, Monique, Felicia, and Tanya.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leona and Herman Overton Sr., Herman Overton Jr. (brother), and Shirley O. Cave (sister).
We will carry Mark’s memory in our hearts, and we thank God Mark is resting with the Lord.
