Mrs. Johnson peacefully passed away at her residence. She is the wife of Mr. William T. Johnson.

Marjorie McKinney Johnson passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at her residence in San Diego, California after battling a long illness.

Marjorie, affectionately known as “Margie” was born on November 26, 1921 in Key West, Florida. She was the second of seven children born to Frank and Vera McKinney. Margie always spoke proudly of her father, who was one of the first African-American to serve as a Chief Officer in the United States Navy and as an instructor at Annapolis, Maryland. She also spoke fondly of her mother who raised seven children ‘just fine’, while her husband was out to sea.

In 1935, Margie and her family moved to San Diego, California, where she attended and graduated from San Diego High School in 1940, and also attended San Diego City College, where she majored in accounting.

On September 22, 1945, Margie united in marriage with William T. Johnson, fondly known as “Peasy”, of the United States Navy. They shared sixty-seven wonderful years of love and marriage. To their union was born their only child, Michael.

In 1970, Margie returned to San Diego City College and completed her goal of earning her Associates, Degree in Accounting, which led to her becoming the first African-American woman to be hired at Union Bank on 30th and University Avenue. She also worked for the County of San Diego as a Social Worker for fifteen years. She retired in 1984.

In her leisure time, Margie enjoyed entertaining friends and family at her home. She was an avid bridge player and participated in many leagues throughout the years, including with her current bridge club (ADBC) at Martin Luther King Park.

Margie was a devoted wife, a special and loving mother, thoughtful aunt, adoring grandmother, delightful great-grandmother and doting great-great-grandmother. Her warm and caring nature will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Margie was preceded in death by both of her parents; three brothers, Frank Jr., Leslie and Lloyd; two sisters, Wilamay and Marie.

She is survived by her devoted husband, William T. Johnson; her loving son, Michael A. Johnson of San Diego, CA; three grandchildren, Michelle of Los Angeles, CA, Nicole of Chicago, IL and Jabulani of Colorado; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her brother, Floyd McKinney (Glenda) of Evansville IN; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; favorite niece, Claudia Thompson of San Diego, CA and a host of other relatives and many friends.
