Marjorie Kemp Liles, 94, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Twin Lakes Community.
Marjorie was a native of Middlesex in Nash County, born on February 10, 1922, daughter of the late Charles Oscar Kemp and Mary Ellen Edwards Kemp. While being born and raised on a large farm in Middlesex, she had lived most of her life in Burlington.
Marjorie was the spouse of the late Edmond H. Liles, Jr., also a native of Middlesex to whom she was married for 69 years (and dated for 6 years). She is survived by two sons, Gregory Kemp Liles and his wife Susan of Burlington, Dr. Edmond Harold (Hal) Liles and wife Rosie of Atlantic Beach; a brother-in-law, Lloyd S. Liles and his wife Doris of Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren, Gregory Scott Liles, Gavin Liles, Edward Liles and Jennifer Liles Morton; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her siblings inclusive of Katie Lee Kemp, Nancy Roberts, Joseph Kemp, Leonard Kemp, Millard Kemp, Johnnie Kemp, Ruth Kemp, Frank Kemp and Charles Kemp, as well as Clyde Kemp (son of Millard) who came to live with her family and was considered as a brother.
Upon graduation from Middlesex High School, Marjorie entered and graduated from Carolina College of Beauty School after which she became a licensed beauty operator and color-trained cosmetologist. Through the course of a 50 year career she was employed as a beauty operator in several towns in North Carolina, in Virginia Beach, VA and in Boston, MA. She retired from the beauty profession in 1991 when she and her partners closed her beauty shop known as Company Shops Beauty Salon.
Marjorie was a long time member and regular attender of the First Baptist Church of Burlington having joined the church upon moving to Burlington after World War II.
Marjorie was a member of the Alamance Country Club where she enjoyed meals and fellowship with her family.
