Marjorie Weed, 91 of Upton, MA and Deer Isle, ME died on January 7, 2017 with her family by her side from the long term effects of suffering a stroke in May. She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Gilbert “Gib” Weed, in 1987, who she met when she summered in Deer Isle as a nanny for the Knight family from Cleveland, Ohio.

Born in Bellevue, Ohio, Marjorie graduated from the Cleveland Art Institute in 1948, and began her legacy of inspiring others in art as the art teacher in Hopedale. “The key to art is to create what you see, not what you think is correct.” Better known as ‘Mrs Weed, the art teacher at Nipmuc’ for 25 years, she also taught in Grafton, and Mendon and Upton schools for a total of 38 years. Her art room was a place of refuge for students who sought out the individuality Mrs. Weed supported. Many of her students continued on to have successful careers in art, remaining in touch with her until her passing.

After retiring from Nipmuc in 1985, Marjorie wanted something to do, and volunteered as the art teacher and developed the art program at Touchstone Community School in Grafton from 1990 to 2006, ending a teaching career of over 50 years in which she inspired and motivated generations of students.

“When I teach I want to teach students that the world is so beautiful, that they can see the world around them so beautifully.” she once said. She, too, brought the beauty of the world out in her own art work, whether as a potter, a weaver of vibrant woven rugs, or a painter of small coastal water color cards that she donated for auctions at Touchstone.

A passionate Democrat, Marjorie had many long discussions about the world of politics with both Democrats and Republicans alike. She relished ‘bumping’ out her son’s Republican vote when she voted Democrat, and through the successful collaboration of her daughter, friends, Countryside Healthcare, and the Marlboro Hudson Ambulance Company, she went to the polls at Nipmuc in November to once again cast her vote.

She leaves three children, Charles of Upton, Judith of Portland and Nancy of Deer Isle, Maine; and three granddaughters, Courtney Weed of Hopedale, Lucy Heyner of Concord, NH, and Willow Weed-Eaton of Deer Isle; and the extended Knight family, as well as her beloved cat Pickles.
