Marjorie Virginia Reade, 89, of Elkhart, was born March 4, 1921, in Olney, Ill., and passed into the loving arms of the Lord on Aug. 7, 2010.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, Steven Ellis and Amanda Jane (Kester) Hutchings and 14 brothers and sisters. Also preceding her in death was her first husband, Orval Staton, and second husband MSgt. Harold L. Reade of the United States Marine Corps.

She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Gosser; son Jeffrey Staton; grandchildren Jessica (Steve) Harman, Joseph (Chrissie) Frederick and Jarrod Gosser; and great-grandchildren Shayne and Lukas Gosser, Nathaniel, Maylynn, Aysa and Steshia Harman and Joseph Jeffrey Staton.

Margie went through the Great Depression and worked at making aircraft parts during the war. She was employed by Kinder Manufacturing for many years and was a great seamstress and did beautiful embroidery work. She ran her own kennel, raising mainly Chihuahuas. We can still see Mom driving around in her German DKW in the back yard before she had the courage to get her license in her late 40s and get out in the open highway. Margie was also an excellent cook and had the art of canning vegetables they would grow. She made the best potato salad in the world, not to mention zucchini-relish.

After the loss of her first husband, Orval, she began her own business in Lakeland, Fla., called Polk Packaging Service. She was also a member of the President’s Club for the sale of Avon Products, and she had her own paper route to support herself.

After marrying Harold, they both went into making handcrafted homemade jewelry which she sold at various art shows. She was an industrious little woman who could be quite “feisty” at times.

Unfortunately, in her later years, she became the victim of Alzheimer’s disease which eventually took her life. One day I found a little note she had left in a very frail handwriting that read, “No one likes me anymore, and I am sorry.” Those words are so untrue because I love my Mom with all my heart, and I will continue to miss her until I see her in Heaven one day.

In the few months before her passing, Margie was given excellent care by Toni Palumbo, who lovingly referred to her as “Ladybug.” In that short amount of time, I believe Toni loved Mom just as much as I did. Thank you, Toni.
