  • Date Of Birth: October 10, 1926
  • Date Of Death: May 15, 2014
  • State: Nebraska

Marjorie Christine Broady, daughter of George Lewis and Jennie Dea (Elliot) Broady was born on October 10, 1926 on the Broady family farm, west of Johnson, Nebraska.  Marjorie was an only child.  She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church north of Johnson, Nebraska.

Marjorie attended Graf, Nebraska country school and later Tecumseh Public Schools where she received her high school education.  After graduation, Marjorie attended and graduated from Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, NE.  It was while going to school in Lincoln that she met her future husband and lifelong partner, Mortimer Rathbone.

Marjorie and Mort were married on February 2, 1947, on her father’s birthday, making their home at her parents’ farm where they raised their three children, Linda, Ron and Steven.  Marjorie loved the farm and especially her garden, raising all kinds of fruits and vegetables for the family dinner table.  There were also many times that she could be found at home making jelly, jam and fruit pies with the wild berries and fruits that Mort would bring home from his travels on the road.  Homemade angel food cakes were Marjorie’s specialty and her children, friends and neighbors could always count on that “special” homemade cake to be delivered on their birthdays and other special occasions.

Along with helping out with the farming and livestock chores, Marjorie went to work at Campbell’s Soup to help out with the expenses of raising a family, working nights so that she could be with her family during the day.  In the early 1960’s Marjorie went to work for the Natural Resources District in Tecumseh, NE and worked there for over 40 years, retiring in 2004.  During her “retirement” years, she never quit working, enjoying her part time jobs at Frasier’s Café and Wherry Mortuary, giving her the opportunity to meet and greet many of the friends she had made throughout the years.  Marjorie was a longtime faithful member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Johnson.

Due to declining health, Marjorie moved to Colonial Acres in Humboldt, NE on April 17th of this year.  It was there she left this life and went home to be with Jesus and other loved ones on May 15, 2014.  Marjorie would have been 88 years old on her next birthday.   She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son, Steven and great-grandson, Nicholas Steven Rathbone.

Those left to cherish and celebrate the life of Marjorie are her daughter, Linda “Annie” Gartner of Tecumseh, son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Denise Rathbone of Humboldt, NE, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, special friend, Lola Heideman of Tecumseh, other relatives and many friends.
