Marjorie Black Watkins, 85, passed away April 15, 2010. She was born November 23, 1924 in Terre Haute, IN and graduated from Wiley High School in 1942. Marjorie was employed by Marshall, Batman & Day as a legal secretary for 35 years. Her first husband, William K. Fowlkes, a U.S. Army Force B-24 pilot, was killed in World War II. She later married Navy Petty Officer Roy W. Watkins, a marriage that lasted 46 years.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Russell and brother , Dean Black. She is survived by son; Robert K. Watkins, grandsons; Timothy, Aaron and Eric Watkins, great-grandchildren; Ashley, Brooklynn and A.J.; nieces; Janet Barnes and Debbie Russell, nephew; John Russell, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
She enjoyed working in the yard in the summer and feeding the birds and one special squirrel all winter. She rescued many stray cats that seemed to find their way to her doorstep, having them neutered and spayed, and finding homes for them or keeping the shy or hard to place ones herself.
She was the perfect grandmother. She always had freshly baked cookies ready for hungry grandchildren. She cooked a big family dinner every weekend, and in the summer planned family picnics in the various Indiana parks. Her fried chicken and made-from-scratch Red Velvet Cake were legend among family and friends.
Her wit and joy for life will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She lived a life she believed God would approve, and we know she is with him now.
