Maris Cukurs, 79, died on Monday, June 25, 2018, after a long battle with asbestosis.

He was born to Karlis and Elza Cukurs in Riga, Latvia. In 1950, the family arrived in the United States as refugees of World War II. He graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

In June of 1960, he married Susan Copenhaver. The marriage produced four children, Julia Wood of Swan Valley, ID; Mark Cukurs of Idaho Falls; Brian Cukurs of Prescott, AZ; and Andrew Cukurs (Unhi) of Kirkland, WA. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Tom (Hannah) Wood, Amanda (Brian) Trimble, Kirtis Hubbard, and two great grandchildren.

Maris had three major phases in life. He managed major construction projects around the country, with 19 years at the INL. Maris served 28 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. After retirement from the first two phases of life, he worked in Real Estate for over 23 years. He was active in the local Realtors Association, serving in many positions, including being their president in 1999. He was appointed for two four year terms to the Education Council at the Idaho Real Estate Commission. Maris was also a Certified Real Estate Instructor.
