Marion LeRoy Carey, age 79, passed away November 5, 2008.  Marion was a resident at the Idaho State Veterans Care Center in Boise, Idaho.  He was the fifth of six children, born on December 8, 1928 to Benjiman Franklin and Emma Margaret (Brahms) Carey in Keeline, Niobrara County, Wyoming.

Marion began his education in Manville, Wyoming and graduated from Nampa, Idaho High School in 1946.  After high school, he worked for Warehouser Industries in Everett, Washington for a short time.  He returned to Idaho in 1948 and worked as a fuel-truck driver in Stibnite, Idaho.

In 1948, he came to Grangeville, where he operated a “skidder” in the woods for Hickey Brothers Logging.  His life-long career began in 1949 and in August 1950, he graduated from Idaho State Barber College in Boise.

He married Marian (“Marty”) Price on November 4, 1950 in Grangeville.  They raised the family together and were later divorced in 1992.  In January 1951, he joined the U.S. Navy as he answered to the call to serve his country.  His four years were served on the “Destroyer U.S.S. Gurke” as a barber.  After his honorable discharge in December of 1954, the family returned to Grangeville where he purchased partnership into Don’s Barber Shop.  Later, Jim Ries, who came from Boise, became his partner.  Marion remained as a barber until his health failed and began his retirement in 1999.

Marion enjoyed music and began playing the “guitar and fiddle” at an early age.  He earned a first place at a Wyoming fiddler’s contest at age 10.  He enjoyed the guitar and singing most of all, along with his family.

Marion had an avid interest in and watched sports.  He forever shared the sports statistics with many of his customers at the barber shop and beyond.  He enjoyed stream fishing and the family campouts.  He liked to dance, and play pinochle.  He was an ardent bowler for 35 years or more, and bowled the leagues weekly and also in the tournament plays.

He did like the Grangeville area and wanted so much to return before his death.

Marion is survived by one son, Ricky D. Carey Sr. of Baker City, Oregon; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Cody) Morris, Christopher Carey and Ricky D. Carey Jr., all of Baker City, Oregon, Michael Carey of Muskegon, Michigan, Lindsey Pilot of Gresham, Oregon, Leslie Carey of Portland, Oregon, and Christine Carey of Baltimore, Maryland; great-grandchildren, Gracie and Blake Morris; one brother, B. Frank (Dorothy) Carey of Pahrump, Nevada; one sister, Evelyn (Joe) Bulson of Boise, Idaho; and several nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by a foster daughter, Becky Trainer of Grangeville; and one son-in-law, Walter Pilot of Gresham, Oregon.  Besides his parents, Marion was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, a daughter, Carol in 1998, and a son, Craig in 2008.
