Marion Charles Hamilton, age 83, of Grove Hill, Alabama passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

Charlie, as his friends knew him, was born on September 20, 1937, in Fulton, Alabama, a small sawmill town in southwest Alabama. He graduated from Sweet Water High School in 1956 and continued his education at Auburn University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry. After graduation, he enlisted in the Federal Reserve and then joined the Alabama National Guard serving as an MP for 10 years.

Charlie’s career in the Wood Industry began when he started working for Scotch Lumber Company in 1962, where he was responsible for land management and timber procurement. He was instrumental in the building of Scotch Plywood in Waynesboro, Mississippi; Beatrice, Alabama; and Fulton, Alabama. In 1965, he became Mill Manager of all three mills.

In 1985, Charlie acquired Hamilton Timber Company in Nanafalia, Alabama. In 1996, Charlie and Montgomery Woods opened the Hamilton Woods Veneer Mill in Grove Hill, Alabama. During this time, he also served on the Alabama State Forestry Commission as Vice Chairman for a period of 12 years. He retired from Scotch Plywood in 2012. A year later he sold his interest in Hamilton Timber Company.

For 15 years, Charlie was married to Sandra Nuss of Pine Hill, Alabama. They had three daughters: Melissa Hamilton (Jill), Kate Huggins (Robby), and Meg Copeland (Todd). On May 19, 1979, Charlie married Sherry Clark of Waynesboro, Mississippi. They were happily married for 43 years and have two daughters: Suzanne Howell (Steve) and Jessica Pierce (Loren). From these two unions they have seven grandchildren: Rachel, Hannah, and Allie Lairmore; Hamilton Huggins; Will and Maggie Whitley; and Caroline Clark Williams.

A true man of his word, Charlie was a person of honesty and integrity. He was a good listener, always gave good advice, was known for his giving nature and kindness to others. What a great role model for his children and grandchildren. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and cook out with his buddies. Family life was very important to Charlie, and he loved the time he spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents: Millard Calvin Hamilton and Thelma Green Hamilton; M. C. Hamilton (Brother) and Betty Hamilton Bradford (Sister). He is survived by his wife, Sherry, his children and grandchildren, Bill and Jack Hamilton (Brothers), and Nita Hamilton Skellie (Sister).

We will miss Charlie as a husband, daddy, Papaw, Pop, and friend.
