Marilynn Jo Smith, 88, of Jacksonville, IL, and formerly of Franklin, died Wed. Oct. 27, 2021, at Prairie Village Healthcare Center. She was born May 11, 1933, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Watson and Mary Bedingfield Chance. She married Lawrence E. “Jack” Smith Jr. on Nov. 8, 1952, in Franklin and he preceded her in death on July 19, 2016.

She is survived by one son and two daughters, Tim Smith of Jacksonville, Mindy Rader of Phoenix, AZ, and Charlotte (Mike) Woodyard of Franklin; seven grandchildren, Abby Whitmire (Jake Dickerson) of Houston, TX, Geoffrey (Sydney Dittman) Smith of Denver, CO, Thomas (Stephanie) Rader of Streator, Daniel Rader of Jerseyville, Tammy Fromme of Franklin, Mathew Woodyard (Alicia Greenleigh) of Chicago, and Luke (Katelyn) Woodyard of Florence, KY; and one sister, Janet (Poul) Popiel of Wildwood, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one half-sister, Louise Chance.

Mrs. Smith was a 1951 graduate of Franklin High School and then attended the University of Illinois. She was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church. She was an artist, gardener, voracious reader, and avid bird watcher, and she possessed a shrewd business mind. Marilynn was also a Bricklayer’s daughter, Navy wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
