M arlene as she was affectionately called by her family and friends was born on May 30, 1935 to the late Otis and Maggie Brown Holmes in Ridgely, MD and transitioned to her heavenly home on January 12, 2019 at Autumn Lake Nursing Home in Denton, MD.

    On October 27, 1956, Marlene was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Edward William Nichols. Sr. “Jerry”. During this union, they were blessed with one son, the late Edward William Nichols, Jr. who passed away in July, 2014.

    “Marlene” was educated in the Caroline County School System and was a member of the Class of 1954 at Lockerman School in Denton, MD.

    Marlene was also employed at the Campbell Soup Company that was located in Chestertown, MD until her son was born, she then became a homemaker until her death.

    Marlene was a jovial individual and loved being with her family especially with her sisters and fussing at her brothers, acting like a big sister telling them what to do as if she was the oldest.  Marlene loved shopping. Every Saturday she and her husband would be gone for hours shopping with her son, and nephew, Tony, on the back seat.  She had a special bond with all of her nieces and nephews.

    Marlene will be truly missed by her sister, brother, nieces and nephews, especially her nephew, Tony and his wife, Marcel. They called her their “Lady Bug”

    Those that mourn her passing today are one sister; Joyce Holmes Coursey (Thomas) and one brother; Ronald Holmes of Denton, MD, one sister-n-law; Leanor Perry of Philadelphia, PA and five nieces;

Shirley Cottom (John), Renee Barber (Rick), Kim Conner (Joe),

Linda Dodd (Frank) and Alvinia Holmes, six nephew; Allan Holmes “Beaver”, Carlton Holmes, William Holmes Jr., Anton Coursey Sr. (Marcel), Evan Holmes (Vonda), and Deshaun Taylor, a host of great and great-great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, a very special cousin, Barbara Rich Ennels.

    Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Edward Nichols Sr., her son; Edward Nichols Jr., three sisters; Violice Stanford, Gladys Holmes, Mildred Holmes, three brothers; Alvin Holmes, William Holmes Sr., Gilbert Holmes
