Marie Snow Greene, local watercolor artist and long-time Shalimar resident, died March 1, 2008, at her home. Marie, the only child of C. D. and Ruth Snow, was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama.
During the early days of WWII, Marie moved to Washington, D.C., where she attended George Washington University and later worked at the Pentagon as a technical illustrator. After the war, Marie met and married retired Naval office Robert E. Greene and they moved to the Fort Walton Beach area. Here she was employed at Eglin Air Force Base as a graphic design artist and technical illustrator. It was also at this time that Marie established her reputation as an award-winning watercolorist and art teacher.
Marie’s watercolor and art philosophy reflects the influences of two of her favorite teachers – Emil Holzhauer and Dong Kingman. She joined San Francisco-based Kingman on several painting trips to Mexico and China. However, it was local artist Emil Holzhauer’s teachings and friendship that continually inspired Marie and her work.
She will be remembered for her kind and gentle ways, for the extensive collection of artwork she leaves behind, and for her love and appreciation of art which she so graciously shared with her students, friends and community. Her work will now be part of the permanent collection at Okaloosa-Walton College and will be on display at The Mattie Kelly Fine and Performing Arts Center Galleries at OWC.
Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert E. Greene, and leaves behind cousins John Snow, Henry Robert Snow, Harold Snow, Marion Certain, James N.
