Marie McGuire Mulvenna, 85, of Newnan died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2016 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Mrs. Mulvenna was born Sept. 2, 1931 in Yonkers, N.Y., the daughter Charles and Catherine McLaughlin McGuire. Her family was living in Scotland when she started in kindergarten, but she grew up primarily in Bronxville, N.Y. where she finished high school. She earned a bachelors degree in journalism and social science from the College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, New York.
She worked for NBC-TV for two years as a writer on “The Tex and Jinks McCrary Show.” She married Charles Mulvenna, a friend since childhood, in 1955. Mrs. Mulvenna did some writing for several local newspapers and was the editor of the Lincoln Park Herald in Lincoln Park, N.J. for four years.
Mrs. Mulvenna later worked for a year for The Sunday Post in Paramus, N.J. and then was hired by Litton to work in public relations and human resources. She also did public relations for the community organizations and for her church. The family moved to Chamblee in 1971 when her husband was transferred to the Atlanta area.
Mrs. Mulvenna was associate editor of The Georgia Bulletin, the state’s Catholic newspaper, for four years and then went to work for Liller-Neal-Welton, an advertising agency. Her next position was with Western Electric, which became AT&T, as community relations manager. During that time, she was part of a group of loaned executives who worked with the King Center and prepared for the first large celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday in 1986, including writing speeches for Coretta Scott King. Charles and Marie Mulvenna moved to Texas in 1991 where she did freelance work in public relations.
She created a campaign for United Way and helped raise awareness of public issues. She worked for a year as director of communication for State Rep. Kevin Brady. She also spent a year as a director of marketing for the South Montgomery/The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce and four years with M3 Public Relations in The Woodlands. The Mulvennas retired and moved to Peach tree City. Mrs. Mulvenna continued to write articles and news releases for her church and a Christmas home tour. She also volunteered with writing and media relations during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
She was an active member at St. Gabriel’s Church in Fayetteville, and she and her husband were among the original parishioners at St. Mary Magdalene, being heavily involved in the establishment of the church.
She was a Eucharistic minister and served on the liturgy committee in both parishes. Mrs. Mulvenna was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mulvenna; and her son, Kevin Mulvenna; and her brother, Charles McGuire. Survivors include a sister, Margaret Costello: daughters, Eileen (Mark) McGann and Theresa Mulvenna; son, Chris (Cindy) Mulvenna; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Mariah, Colin, Shaun, Kristen, Angie, Chelsea, and Tyler; and 16 great-grandchildren.
