Marie J. (Nan) Behre, passed away at Memorial Hospital in South Bend on April 5th, 2022, from complications with Covid.  Born Marie Jeanette Blanche Caron, on January 18th, 1931, in Fitchburg, MA to Hector and Bertha Caron (nee Guertin).  The second of four sisters Nan was preceded in death by Doris, Phyllis and Elizabeth.

After high school she worked as a secretary for Burbank Hospital.  In 1951 she went to work for The Army Security Agency at Ft. Devens, MA. There she met Cpl Louis J. Behre whom she married, and moved to Garden City, NY.  Nan worked at Mitchell AFB as a stenographer up until starting a family.

The family moved to Brussels, Belgium in 1961.  While being a homemaker in Belgium and England, Nan enjoyed traveling, learning to be a gourmet cook, enjoying rich friendships, and exploring Europe’s culture and the arts.  The family returned to the US and settled in South Bend, where she became involved with the Women’s Art League and the Alliance Francais.  She obtained her BS in Early Childhood Education in 1981 and went on to teach K-3 in Massachusetts, Florida and Michigan. 

Nan loved being a mother, grandmother and meticulous homemaker.  She enjoyed gardening and nature, trips to the beach, teaching, cross country skiing, Art and Astrology.  She enjoyed hosting parties and was enthusiastic for every holiday.  She was a woman of faith and a patriot, as well as a wonderful correspondent and loyal friend.  She loved taking care of her beloved grandchildren and was a constant present in her family’s lives and will be deeply missed.

Nan is survived by her children, Donna, Chris and Nick, her grandchildren Maximilian, Alexander and Hannah, as well as many nieces and nephews.
