Marie Louise Cass Luft of Vestavia Hills, AL, passed away Friday, June 3, 2016 after a lengthy illness of cancer. Marie was born July 10, 1945 in New Orleans, LA. She is survived by her son, Erich Edward Luft; Erich’s fiance’, Karisa Houser of Bakersfield, CA; grandson, Corey Edward Luft of Bakersfield; and several cousins.
Marie was married to the late Freddie Edward Luft, Jr., originally from New Orleans, and was the daughter of Montgomery (Monte/Marty) Albert Cass and Louise Bogan Cass, both of New Orleans. Marie was a graduate of John McDonogh High School in New Orleans. In October, 1973, she and Freddie got married in New Orleans. They and Erich moved from New Orleans to Birmingham, AL in December 1979, transferring with South Central Bell. She retired from BellSouth in December 2001.
Marie was an avid Louisiana State University (LSU) fan. She and her family would like to thank Dr. Cara Bondly and her staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham for their wonderful care during her illness. Marie would also like to thank her many friends, especially Harold and Mary Magee, Bernie McFerrin, Duska Powell and Brenda Gray, as well as her cousins, Denny Cass, Carolyn Crabtree and Dawn Pearce.
