Marie Blazek, 100, of St. Paul died Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Mrs. Blazek was born April 18, 1907 at Billings, OK to Arch and Laura (Hake) Nicholas.

The family moved to Salina, KS when Marie was a small child, they later moved to Lincoln, then to Palmer, coming to Howard County in 1922.

Marie received her education in Merrick and Howard County Schools, graduating with a commercial and shorthand course from the St. Paul Business College.

Marie was united in marriage to Edward C. Blazek on August 25, 1926 in Grand Island. They lived in St. Paul all of their married life. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1986 at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul.

Edward died August 10, 1987 after a bout with cancer. Marie continued to make her home in St. Paul. She was employed at Bartle’s Drygoods Store for 37 years, retiring in 1972.

Marie was a 69 year member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. She was a member of the Presbyterian Womens organizations, a longtime member of the ZCBJ Fraternal Herald Lodge of St. Paul and Lodge 152 of Farwell when it merged with St. Paul. She was a 51 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Ono Chapter #21 of St. Paul and then the Andrew Chapter #41 of Grand Island when the two chapters merged.

Marie enjoyed cooking, reading and helping at her church.

She is survived by a sister, Adabelle Walker of Lima, OH; two nephews, Dale Suntych and his wife, Martha of Grand Island who were Marie’s longtime caregivers and Bill and Sarah Olesen of Lima, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; two sisters, Serena Peterson and Inez Suntych and a foster brother, Harold Nicholas.
