Marian Theiss Whipkey, age 94 of Salem died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, December 9, 2012 at her home. She was born March 15, 1918 in Salem, the daughter of the late John and Mary Louise (Sechler) Theiss. Marian was a 1936 graduate of Salem High School and received a degree in Industrial Relations from I.C.S. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Famous Dairy and previously worked at the Deming Co. in the Purchasing Department and at the 1st National Bank, now known as Key Bank as a teller. She was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir, circles and many committees. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Stars, Progressive Mother’s Club, P.T.A., member and past president of Band Mothers, and Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer. She was also a member of Church Women United, Saxon Scholarship Fund, Saxon Retirees, Salem Retirees, Salem Senior Citizens and Beta Sigma Phi – Secretary to Scholarship Fund. Marian was awarded the Outstanding Salem Senior Citizen Award for the year 2000 and the Outstanding Church Women United Award. Her husband, Ronald E. Whipkey, whom she married June 17, 1939, preceded her in death on April 11, 1987. A sister, Louise Thompson also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Linda W. Potter of New Orleans, LA; a brother, Richard (Hope) Theiss; a sister, Dorothy Strain of St. Petersburg, Florida; grandson, Jason (Alison) Potter of Pittsburgh, PA; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Grayson Potter; grandson, Christopher (Genevieve) Potter of Burlington, Vermont; great-grandchildren, Julian and Siobhan Potter; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and caring neighbors.
