Marian Catherine Rock, former City Clerk of Williams, passed away at home on September 12, 2010, at 79 years of age.
She passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side. She was under the care of Northland Hospice. She leaves behind her husband of 51 years, Stanley; her sons, David (wife, Sandra) and Brian (wife, Julie); her grandchildren, Brianne, Kristina, Todd (wife, Katie) and Alexandra; and her great-grandchild, Donovan.
Marian was born March 9, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in the Seven Hills area, a suburb of Cleveland. Her parents, Joseph and Anna Mary Trisl Brenner, were immigrants from Germany. Her parents, as well as her one brother, Joseph, Jr., predeceased her.
Marian graduated from Parma Schaaf High School in 1949 (Marian received the Parma Schaaf 49ers’ Newsletter until her death). Her first job as a teenager was working with kids at a Catholic School. After working at the Mayer Marks Furniture Store, she attended and graduated from Cleveland Business College, sharpening up her considerable office skills.
Marian met husband Stanley in 1956, and they were married on October 28, 1959. Stan and Marian, with young son, David, moved to Williams in 1962 to open a Western Auto Store in the downtown area. Then in 1970 they managed the Bel Air Motel, presently a Budget Host motel. One day Marian went to the city offices in order to register a complaint about the rodeo grounds to Bob Sharpe, the City Manager–while there she asked about part-time work, and got a job which began on January 15,1976, which was never part time! Eventually, in 1988, she was named City Clerk/Personnel Director and held the position until she retired August 26, 1994. (Stan during this time started a 20 year employment with the Williams Unified School District #2). Stan and Marian enjoyed 16 years of wonderful retirement together!
Marian also contributed to the Williams community through her work with the ESA sorority, the Williams Homemakers’ Club, and as a member of Williams Community United Methodist Church (since 1963). She loved knitting and crafts, and was a 4H leader for 19 years (dogs and community). Her own hobby was working with her collies, training, grooming and showing many to obedience titles and championships. She also loved traveling and sightseeing, going on cruises, and visiting her children and grandchildren.
