Maria Patricia “Patsy” Vela Cavazos

August 5, 1956 – May 14, 2018

Patricia (Patsy) Vela Cavazos, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at her residence on May 14, 2018 of complications of a stroke.

Patsy graduated from Harlingen High School in 1976 and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education and Master’s degree in Counseling from Pan American University. She was a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and Creative Journal Arts Therapist. She dedicated her life to the service of others as a teacher, school counselor for Harlingen CISD and San Benito CISD, and impacted the lives of many families and interns as a counselor at the Family Crisis Center. Patsy was a spiritual, generous, and humble human being who shared her love, light, and faith with family and friends by praying milagritos and lighting candles.

She was passionate about music, writing original songs, and loved to play the guitar and piano. She released a CD “Footprints in the Heart” as well as a CD corrido with her sister, Luti Vela, for her uncle, the late Honorable Filemon Vela. Patsy graciously shared her many talents with others. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and those whose lives she impacted.

She is preceded in death by her father, the late Honorable Moises (Moe) Vela Sr. 

She is survived by her beloved and only son, Javier Vela Cavazos, and his wife, Alyssa, and the love of her life, her preciosa nieta, Alyxia, who will love, cherish, and carry on Abuelita Patsy’s legacy of service, spirituality, and kindness.  She is also survived by her Mother, Mary Jo Vela, and her siblings, Luti Vela, Moe Vela Jr., Manny Vela and wife Amy, Pepper Arguello and husband Bass. She is also survived by her beloved nephews and nieces and their families.
