Maria C. Tovar, 93, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away at 9:54 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN.
She was born on November 8, 1922 to the late Manuel and San Juana (Trejo) PeA±a
in Antonio, TX, and has lived in New Carlisle, IN since 2010, coming from Oceanside, CA.
Along with her parents; she was preceded in death by her daughter, Herlinda Varela; sons, Steve, Richard, and James Varela; sisters, Andrea Velasquez, Elvira PeA±a
and Clelia Terrasas; and brothers, Bacilio “Bill”, James, Santiago, Raul “Rudy”, and Manuel PeA±a.
Maria was initially a translator in East Chicago, IN and later worked at Illinois Bell Telephone and Supreme Products in Chicago, IL, before retiring to California in 1979.
Maria is survived by her grandchildren, Steve (wife Carol) Varela of New Carlisle, IN; Elizabeth (husband Chris) Carrier of Oak Park, Il, Laura Hinyup of Tucson, AZ; and her great-grandchildren, Serena and Lara Varela; Joshua Hinyup; and Lucas and Benjamin Carrier.
Maria attended St. John Kanty in Rolling Prairie, IN. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
