Maria (Musumeci) DeBenedictis, 82, of Newington died peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2015. She was born in Priolo Gargallo, Sicily, Italy daughter of the late Sebastiano and Rosa (Cavarra) Musumeci. Prior to residing in Newington, Maria lived in Priolo and assisted with running a family owned grocery store, known as a putia. A forty-four year Newington resident, Maria was a communicant of St. Ann Church, New Britain. She first worked at the Underwood Typewriter Company and then retired as a machinist at Dunham and Bush in 1997. Maria enjoyed playing cards, was an avid gardener, fantastic cook and enjoyed canning food, often canning the tomatoes that she picked from her own garden. Throughout her life she loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress, she once designed and sewed the uniforms for an entire Italian soccer team in Italy. Maria loved to dance her entire life and often shared her life stories with everyone. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, family was everything to Maria. She loved her grandchildren more than anything in the world. She is survived by her children, Lorenzo and his wife Rosemary of Mckinney, TX, Rosalba of West Hartford and Patricia Manion and her husband Stephen of Newington; her four grandchildren, Marc DeBenedictis, Paul DeBenedictis and his wife Sara, Nathaniel Nadeau and Nicole Nadeau and her fiancé Ryan McAllister. Maria had a special spot in her heart for her only granddaughter, Nicole who was always there to care for her grandmother. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter Arabella Rose DeBenedictis; brother, Salvatore Musumeci and his wife Elena of Berlin and her sister Antonia (Musumeci) Marchese of Priolo, Sicily, Italy; and many nieces and nephews both in the US and Italy, especially her “Angel”, Angela Cacciola whom she loved dearly.
