Maria A. “Chona” Lopez It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, sister, and grandmother, Maria A. “Chona” Lopez, 92, on August 21, 2022 surrounded by her loving and closest family at home.

Chona was born on August 15, 1930 in Silver City, New Mexico to Melchor Renteria and Maria Valverde Renteria. She grew up in Janos, Mexico and later moved to Deming, New Mexico where she spent the rest of her life. Chona, who was lovingly known as Grandma Chona or Nana, loved her family very much and she leaves us with great and everlasting memories. She was a devoted Jehovah Witness, where she had many brothers and sisters from the congregation. She loved reading her bible and she enjoyed preaching the word.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren Johnny Avalos (Jimmy, Alex, Anthony); Gloria and Skeeter Lassiter (Gary, Stacey, Jennifer, Skeeter); Sylvia and Manny Orquiz (Joanna, Peeper, Laura, Sarah, Phillip); Mary Lou and Carlos Rios (Patsy, Carlos, Jose, Cathy); Cynthia and Manuel Orosco (Stephanie, Deanna, Ashley, Manny); Joe and Laurie Avalos (Joey, Andrew); Annie and Aaron Renteria (Eric, Gabriel, Aaron, Rebecca); Michael Renteria (Mikey, Aliyah, Andrew) and step children Juanna Becerra, Pablo Lopez, Marissa Medrano, Lencho Lopez, and Santiago Lopez. She is also survived by 53 great grandchildren and 5 1/2 great-great grandchildren, and siblings Ernesto Renteria, Amado “Mayo” Renteria, Ruben Renteria, and Olivia Quintana.

She is preceded in death by her husband Nolberto Lopez, her parents, siblings Magdalena Pacheco, Maruca Renteria, Miguel Renteria, Ramon “Mony” Renteria, Manuel Renteria, step sons Manuel Lopez, Nolberto Lopez Jr., daughter in law Irene Cortez Avalos, and great-granddaughter Angelina Rios.
