Marguerite “Rita” Hawkins, 63, of C.R. 22, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday (March 6, 2007) in Elkhart General Hospital, after a battle with breast cancer.
She was born Nov. 6, 1943, in Providence, R.I., to Robert M. and Eugenie (Cartier) Dwyer. She married Paul Hawkins. They later divorced.
She is survived by her church family at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mishawaka and her caregivers, David and Connie Ritchie of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by her companion of 15 years, Kelby K. Mansfield, who died Jan. 25, 2007. She also was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Hawkins formerly worked at the Elkhart County Courthouse and was a waitress for several area restaurants. She retired from M-3 and Associates in Elkhart and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mishawaka, where she played the organ for many years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, plants and working in her yard. She also enjoyed animals, particularly her cat.
