Margaret Nelson Oltrogge was born on April 4, 1931, in Denver, Colorado, to Carl Walfred and Margaret Pauline (Johnson) Nelson. She joined siblings, Pauline, 10 and Carl, 7. Margaret passed away on August 9, 2019.
She attended Denver Public Schools (Mora Moore Elementary and Byers Junior High School) and graduated from South High School in 1949. She worked many summer jobs from the age of fourteen, most frequently at Conoco Touraide Headquarters in Denver. Margaret lived in Pasadena, California for a year and a half and attended Pasadena City College. She then worked for Phillips Petroleum as a secretary and switchboard operator in Denver until she saved enough money to pay for her next semester in college. Margaret graduated from Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California in 1956 and taught in Denver Public Schools and in Ithaca, New York. Later she obtained a Masters Degree in Library Media at the University of Colorado, and worked as a Library Media Specialist in Jefferson County Schools, Colorado, for nineteen years.
