Margaret “Martsie” Jean Brown Spencer, 75, passed away on August 19, 2022, of complications due to kidney failure. She was born October 1, 1946 to John and Jean Crockett Brown, and was the oldest of three girls.

Mom was raised in Ogden, Utah, graduating from Ogden High School and Weber State College. After graduating, she worked for the IRS. She also sold Tupperware, making many friends along the way.

Later, she went back to Weber State, earning her teaching degree. She taught 2nd grade at Country View Elementary in Hooper, Utah for many years, where she touched the lives of many students and made many lifelong friends. She had a love of reading and of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, and organized the yearly “Read Across America” activities every year at Country View. She also pulled out a loose tooth or two along the way. Mom later received her Masters of Education. Mom was also Vice-President of the Weber Education Association for many years.

Mom was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It was while at an activity at the Ogden LDS Institute that she met DeVerl Spencer. He later told his friend that he had met the girl he was going to marry. They were married on September 6, 1967, in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived most of their married life in Roy, Utah, and had four children, Shannon, Kurt, Trisha, and Chad.

Mom was very talented. She played the organ and piano. She led the singing in Primary and played the organ in church meetings. She held many callings in her ward. She was best known for her crocheting. Many friends and family members have afghans that she crocheted, or baby blankets that she made.

Mom loved her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids, who called her Grammy. She loved getting together with the family for the holidays. She made the best barbecue sandwiches, potato salad, and macaroni salad. Mom and Dad traveled extensively across the United States together and enjoyed it tremendously. As Mom’s health declined the last few years, Dad was her caregiver. She and Dad have a great love story, and they are a loving example of devotion and service to each other.

Mom is survived by her husband DeVerl; children Shannon (Lex) Olson, Kurt (Jody) Spencer, and Trisha (Aaron) McPhie; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons; her sisters MaryAnn (Vern) Holmes, and Barbara (Carl) Lindeman; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her son, Chad Andrew Spencer, as well as 2 nephews, Nicholas Lindeman and Zachary Holmes.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Intensive Care Unit at the Davis Hospital and Community Nursing Services Home Health and Hospice for their loving service and the great care they provided to Mom.
