Margaret Lynn Puryear Atkinson, 96, passed away Monday, February 7, 2011, in Fairfax, Virginia. Born in Boomer, West Virginia, she received her teaching certificate from Marshall University and taught in the Island Creek Coal Company elementary school in Holden, West Virginia.
She met her future husband, John R. Atkinson of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, through the All American Tours organized out of Lexington, Kentucky, when he worked for the company in exchange for tour benefits.
They were married February 19, 1938, in Catlettsburg, Kentucky and moved to Anderson in 1940. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, who was manager of WHBU Radio in Anderson for 40 years.
She is survived by her son, Barry Marlene Atkinson of Fairfax, Virginia, and daughter, Jane Atkinson of Stamping Ground, Kentucky; two granddaughters, Cindy Marty Atkinson Robinson of Springfield, Virginia, and Katie Atkinson of Arlington, Virginia; and a great granddaughter, Molly Claire Robinson of Springfield, Virginia.
