Margaret J. “Maynard” Owen, age 87, of Cassopolis, died Friday, October 21, 2016 at 11:13 p.m. in Lakeland Health Center in Niles, Michigan in the peace and comfort of her family’s presence.
She was born April 21, 1929 in Cassopolis, Michigan to Arba and Leita (McCully) High, the middle of three daughters. She married Jack C. Owen February 20, 1949 in Cassopolis, Michigan. He preceded her in death September 13, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marion Parker, Jean High; and one brother in law, Bob Parker. In her early years, Margaret worked at the Ford Garage in Cassopolis in the bookkeeping department.
She worked at Gohn’s Drug store in high school as a soda jerk and then again returned to Gohn’s in 1974 as a cashier where she was working when she retired. She was a life member of Eastern Star #476 of Edwardsburg, Michigan. Her hobbies included cake decorating for numerous weddings, birthdays, graduations, and many other occasions. She won Best of Show and Grand Champion for the cake she entered in the Cass County Fair. This cake was taken to State and she won the Wilton’s Championship. She crocheted Barbie dresses and afghans. She also made many quilts for Cass County Fair, where she earned many ribbons.
Margaret always made rosettes (cookies) for Christmas for friends and family. Every New Year’s Day, she fixed Chop Suey with beef and pork for her family. Her daughter in law said pigs never root backwards. So, if you eat pork on the first day of the year, you will always go forward through the year. She loved orchids, ferns and any flowers that were given to her. Margaret will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy, one son, Dan (Lois) Owen of Cassopolis; two daughters, Denise (Jeff) Higley of Edwardsburg, Dawn Handshaw of Grand Rapids; eight grandchildren, Carrie (Phil) Peffers, Lori (Diane) Owen-Rogers, Jennifer (Sun) LeMunyon, Susie Higley, Jeff (Jennifer) Higley, Jr., Amy (Rob) Bow, Heather Handshaw, Kyle Robertson; five great grandchildren, Owen Peffers, Jack Higley, Ellie Higley, Michael Bow, Lilly McCloud; and a host of nieces and nephews.
