Mrs. Margaret Corra Leavell Mann, 90, died November 29, 2014 following an extended illness. She was a self-proclaimed “newcomer” to Newnan, having only lived here 72 years. Mrs. Mann was born March 8, 1924 in Memphis, Tenn., daughter of the late Dr. Leonard O. Leavell and the late Annie Glenn Elias Leavell. Mrs. Mann grew up in Ripley, Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky and Gadsden, Alabama. After graduating from high school, her father was called as pastor of First Baptist Church in Newnan.
She graduated with a degree in English from Mercer University in 1945 where she was a member of the Phi Mu sorority, Kappa Delta Epsilon educational fraternity, and an honorary member of Pi Gamma Mu. She was married to the late Robert Strickland Mann, Jr. of Newnan on June 5, 1948. Mr. Mann was a prominent jeweler in Newnan and owned R.S. Mann, Jr. Jeweler from 1950 until 1990. Mrs. Mann was a registered bridal consultant with the National Bridal Service and worked side-by-side with her husband in this capacity for 40 years.
A committed member of First Baptist Church of Newnan, Mrs. Mann faithfully attended the Genet Barron Sunday School until her health prevented her. She served her church in various capacities over the years, from playing the organ and working as a church secretary to teaching the young married Sunday School class. Mrs. Mann assisted on numerous church committees, including the Personnel Committee, Historical Committee and Pastor Search Committee. She also served for two years as the Director of the church’s Woman’s Missionary Union. Known for her impeccable manners and gracious hospitality, many in Newnan can attest to Mrs. Mann’s humorous and generous spirit. Her famous pound cake and boiled custard brought joy to many who were sick or grieving.
Mrs. Mann is survived by her son, Theo Davis Mann (Vicki) of Newnan; daughter, Anne Leavell Mann Collingsworth (J.B.) of Newnan; grandchildren, Margaret Helen Mann Leech (Michael) of Atlanta, Theo Davis Mann, Jr., of Newnan, Mary Margaret Collingsworth of Nashville, Tennessee; Robert Leavell Collingsworth of Fort Worth, Texas, Wesley Joseph Collingsworth (Taylor) of Nashville, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, William Michael Leech III of Atlanta and Ruby Leavell Leech of Atlanta; nieces and nephews.
