Marga E. Hayward, nee Salbaum, 95, of Shiloh, Illinois, born September 15, 1922 in Nuremberg, Germany departed this life Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Cedarhurst of Shiloh surrounded by the love of her family and the welcoming arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Marga’s early years were spent in Nuremberg, Germany and for several years in her teens, Leicester, England. During World War II, Marga was employed by the German Army in a civilian capacity. She was garrisoned in France as the war ended and forced to find her own way home to Nuremberg when the German army fled.
Because Marga was fluent in English she was subsequently employed as a secretary by the occupying American Army Air Corp in Nuremberg. There she met her future husband, Robert “Bob” F. Hayward; they married on December 26, 1948 in Nuremberg. Marga was a loving wife, mother of four, and homemaker who supported Robert in his 26-year military career which took them to postings both at home and abroad. Marga occasionally worked in clerical positions and wherever they were stationed would seek out volunteer opportunities such as Gray Ladies or thrift shop worker. She also joined and was active in the NCO Wives Club and German Wives Club. Marga was a long-time member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and dearly loved her Church and her faith family. Marga was preceded in death by her devoted Robert on May 20, 2007.
Also preceding her were her parents, Michael and Anna Salbaum; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Francis (Pat) Windover; her father- and mother-in-law, Moses and Geneva Hayward; a sister-in-law, Eathel Adams; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William H. (Wanda) Hayward, Moses J. Hayward Jr., Paul Hayward, and Lawson R. (Gertrude) Hayward. Marga is survived by daughter, Shirley A. (Edward) Quinn of Belleville, Illinois; son, Norman E. (Joy) Hayward of Belleville, Illinois, son, Raymond A. (Joanne) Hayward of Buckeye, Arizona and daughter, Linda A. (Terry) Liebscher of Hillsboro, Illinois. Besides her children, she is survived by grandchildren; Christopher (Lana) Feix, Amanda Hayward, Deidre (Cannon) Fulmer, Nicole Hayward, Allyssa Blasdel, Christian Hayward, Cali Hayward, Michael Hayward, Robert Hayward, Paul Hayward, and Brent Miller; great-grandchildren, Julian and Heidi Feix, Tyler and John Zeigler, Jaxon and Rylie Brewer, Tecopa Burgess and Michael Norman Fulmer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and residents of Cedarhurst of Shiloh who enriched Marga’s final years. There are no words to express how deeply we appreciate the love and care the staff extended to Marga and her family in her last days.
