Maree Dunn Chapman
Born August 3rd, 1925; the eldest of ten to John Tennyson Sr. and Gena Gray Dunn. Surviving siblings are: Rose Ester Crenshaw and Goldia Jean Hart. Our loving mother (granny, aunt and friend) passed away peacefully on September 26th, 2017. Music softly played at her bedside as she took her last breath in complete peace.
Raised in Lasca, AL, she worked alongside family in cotton fields and vegetable garden. Her favorite spot, however, was at her mother’s side preparing meals. She and her mother prepared many meals for the men who were in the fields from daylight to dark. She spoke fondly of her parents’ love and dedication to each other. Her sewing skills were acquired under the tutelage of her mother.
She left Lasca and moved to Grove Hill upon high school graduation. She’d heard that a “Mr. Gordon was looking for someone to work in his dry good store.” Taking flight, before her dad returned from the fields, she began her lifelong adult life in Grove Hill. She soon met her future husband (Morgan), married and raised two children: James Morgan Chapman Jr. (Carolyn) and Rebecca Chapman Windley (John). Grandchildren include: Phillip Alton Chapman (Dana), Steven Wheeler Chapman (Wendy), Cindy Maree Chapman, Catherine Camille Sanders (Sandy), and Elizabeth Anne Clark (Joel). Great grandchildren: Nathaniel Daniel Chapman, Kaela Chapman, Windley Sage Sanders, Keller Grey Sanders, Von Wheeler Chapman, and Luella Scout Clark.
Our mother will be greatly missed. The joy of knowing that she lives in a glorious, wonderful place free of any physical or mental stroke barriers helps heal our loss.
