Mamie Vance, 89, passed away Tuesday, August 30, at Park Valley Inn Health Care in Round Rock, Texas.
She was born in Gurley, Alabama, and lived in Huntsville until her parents, William Leslie and Theodora C. Herring, died while she was still a child. Mamie then lived with various family members thereafter, living in Minnesota and eventually in Woodstock, Alabama.
She returned to Huntsville in 1960 with her husband, making it her permanent home until moving to Birmingham in 2000. She raised her family and made many friends in Huntsville. Mamie was known to those she met and to all who loved her as having an optimistic outlook on life, a generous heart, and a witty sense of humor. Mamie worked at El Mejicano Restaurant on Patton Road in Huntsville several years during the 1990s as a hostess. There, she enjoyed the camaraderie of her co-workers and meeting the public. She felt the job kept her young.
Her husband, Lucian B. Vance, Jr., precedes her in death. She is survived by her children, Karen Rhodes, Gregory Vance and his wife, Sheila, and Bryan Vance, as well as several loving nieces and nephews. She has four grandchildren, Neil Rhodes, Scott Vance, Amalie Vance and Seth Vance.
Mamie has a grandson who has autism.
