Malene M. Walstra, age 98, of DeMotte, IN passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Oak Grove Christian Retirement Village.
Malene was just one day shy of her 99th birthday. She was born on January 20, 1923 in Fair Oaks, Indiana, the daughter of Jake and Agnus (nee Terpstra) Hoffman.
Malene graduated from Fair Oaks High School, Class of 1941. She married Clarence Walstra on August 11, 1942 in DeMotte. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1996.
Malene was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, and the oldest member of the church. She helped at the Christian School, was a part of the “Mother’s Circle”, did volunteer work including at Oak Grove before she moved there.
Malene loved flowers, birds, painting, driving, and “going fast”. The highlight of her week was coffee with the kids and grandkids after church each Sunday.
She is survived by her loving children: Ron (Marilyn) Walstra of Wheatfield, Diane (Rudy) Zylstra of DeMotte, Wayne (Margie) Walstra of Fair Oaks, Judy (John) Echterling of DeMotte; 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 4 great great-grandchildren; and sister, Shirley Lowe.
Malene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters: Grace (Bill) DeYoung and Elvina (Bert) DuJardin, brothers, Wilbur (Sue) Hoffman and Al (Pat) Hoffman; and all of her Walstra in-laws.
