Malcolm Whipple, 94, of rural Utica, passed away Friday morning, August 23, 2019 at Manor Court of Peru. Mr. Whipple was born on February 27, 1925 in LaSalle to Warner and Ida (Monteith) Whipple. He married Doris Ann Baker on June 17, 1949 in the First Congregational Church, Peru. Malcolm was a graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School and received a degree in Agriculture Economics from the University of Illinois.
Mr. Whipple had been a life-long farmer. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening, participating in and attending local musical events, writing poetry and his family. Malcolm was an active member of the Waltham Presbyterian Church and the Waltham school board. He was an original director of the Colonial Bank, which is now Heartland Bank in Peru. He served as a president for the LaSalle County Farm Bureau and the LaSalle County Pork Producers. He served on the board for the LaSalle County Farm Supply, the Illinois Valley Community Hospital and Illinois Valley Hospice, where he was also an active volunteer. Malcolm was a volunteer English and Reading instructor at IVCC as part of the literacy program. He was a member of the IVCC Foundation, providing two scholarships to deserving IVCC students, a charter member of the 21st Century Club at IVCC and was elected into the IVCC Hall of Fame in 2012 as a “Friend of the College.”
He was also on the LaSalle Country Historical Society, the Utica Garden Club and the Illinois Valley Symphony Association.He is survived by his five children, Beth Whipple (Greg Lauf) Hahne of Spring Valley, Malcolm “Monty” (Mary) Whipple, Jr. of Utica, William (Anne) Whipple of Lake Forest, Mark (Brendan Whitson) Whipple of Aurora and Greg (Jola) Whipple of Chicago; nine grandchildren, Christina Whipple-Nourie, Ginny Whipple, Robert (Whitney) Whipple, Kelly (Jared) Torgeson, Bart (Andrea) Lazarczyk, Ian Whipple, Ashley Whipple, Christopher Hahne and Paige Hahne, six great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Rita Whipple. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Ann Whipple on July 19, 2001; one brother, Warner Whipple, Jr.; and one sister, Phoebe Whipple.
