Mr. Malcolm Richard “Dick” Wood, age 79, of Atlanta, Georgia, originally of Lanett, Alabama passed into his savior’s arms on Saturday, April 4th, 2015 at the Fountainview Care Facility in Atlanta, Georgia.
Richard was born on February 29th, 1936 in Lanett, Alabama to the late, Malcolm Taylor Wood and Louise Belcher Wood.
Originally a resident of Lanett, Richard attended Lanett High School and Auburn University, where he discovered his God given talent for football. Upon graduating from Auburn University in 1960, he followed his passion for football, both as a quarterback and as a coach in the National Football League.
Richard played for five different AFL teams during his football career, the only player to do so. He completed 522 career passes for 51 touchdowns. He was also the first quarterback to throw for a touchdown at Shea Stadium.
Richard’s career as an assistant coach included positions with the universities of Ole Miss, Auburn, and Georgia. He also coached with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, and the New York Jets.
Richard is survived by his wife, Peggy Bartlett Wood; son, Richard (Bart) Wood; daughter, Rhonda Wood Barker; sisters, Anita Wood Coleman, Diane Wood White.
