Lula Maizell Powell Merritt
Lula Maizell Powell Merritt, age 92, of Greensboro, GA died Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at her residence. Born in Oconee County on November 4, 1925, she was the daughter of the late James Arnie Powell and Thelma Ray Harper Powell. On October 26, 1940 she married Gordon L. Merritt, Jr. in Penfield, GA. She was a homemaker and also helped her husband on their dairy farm. She was a loving mother, grandmother great and great, great grandmother, whose greatest joys were being with her family and friends. She also enjoyed feeding birds and sitting on her porch.
In addition to her husband, Gordon L. Merritt, Jr. who preceded her in death in 1998, she was also preceded in death by a son, Lester Ray Merritt, Sr. and siblings, Juanita Hinton, Eldred Moon, Ann Cassidy, Claude Lee Powell, James “Red” N. Powell, Hollis Elder Powell, Delmus Conway Powell, and Graham Brown. Survivors include a daughter, Hilda Jackson (Butch) of Siloam, GA; a son, Melvin Terry Merritt (Donna) of Greensboro, GA; brother, Lamar Powell of Siloam, GA; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; special niece and nephew, Linda Ray and J. C. Rhodes; a number of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
