Madaline Johnson, 94, a longtime resident of Indian Springs, Alabama, passed away on August 9, 2022, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Madaline was born December 6, 1927, in Hot Springs, Arkansas to Silas Edgar and Myrtle Cartwright. She was the eldest of two children and is preceded in death by her brother, Freeman Cartwright.  The family moved frequently during Madaline’s teen years, living in Richmond, California and Denver, Colorado before returning to Hot Springs. Madaline graduated from Denver South High School, where she was interested in shorthand and typing.

In 1947 Madaline married the love of her life, Maurice (Mickey) Johnson, a sailor she met in Richmond during WWII, and with whom she corresponded during the war. The young couple settled in Birmingham, Alabama, subsequently moving to Homewood and then Indian Springs. They shared 43 years of marriage prior to Mickey’s passing in 1991 and were blessed with one child, Laura. Madaline put her typing and shorthand skills to good use and enjoyed working at Frigidaire, Amoco Oil, and Quality Petroleum, where she excelled due to her organizational skills and work ethic. Madaline was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood for many years and was active in Sunday School, the Dawsonairs, and she especially enjoyed working in the church library. She traveled extensively in early retirement, but in later years loved tending to her home and beautiful yard in Indian Springs. She cut the grass herself on a riding mower until well into her 80’s and liked handling repairs around the house, particularly when she could complete them herself without asking for help!

Madaline will be remembered for her independent spirit and deep faith. She was a true southern lady in every sense of the phrase. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Johnson Burke and granddaughter, Diana Burke, both of Scottsdale, Arizona. She will be interred at Beulah Cemetery in Sterrett, Alabama, next to her husband Mickey.
