Mack Baker passed away October 22, 2016. He was born in Mansfield, LA and moved to New Mexico at the age of two. As a pilot and aeronautical engineer, Mack served 32 years in the US Air Force, where he flew B-17’s in WWII and small planes in Vietnam. He was part of the Space and Missile Systems Command in its early years, was a project engineer in developing early satellite programs, a launch director on 12 early Titan III launches, and commander of a missile test group launching Titan, Atlas, Minutemen and Thor. He served as AF ROTC Commandant at Texas Tech and retired from the Air Force in 1975.
After retiring, he worked on the shuttle program with Lockheed in Cape Canaveral, participating in 15 successful shuttle launches. He was also active in prison and jail ministries and was a member of Paradise Hills United Methodist Church.
Mack is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beverly; sons, Clyde and Steven (wife Jackie); daughter, Karen Gregory (husband David), 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
