Lyle Samuel  “Red” Hazlet, 93, of Moberly, died Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at Moberly Nursing and Rehab, with his wife and Pastor Patti Miller by his side.  Lyle was born December 9, 1923 in Decatur, IL,   to Sam and Ola Mae (Stabb) Hazlet.

He joined the U.S. Army on February 10, 1943, stationed at Camp Crowder, MO, before being sent to combat in Kwajalein, in the Marshall Islands.

After receiving his honorable discharge he continued his education to become a Civil Engineer.  He retired after 32 years of service with the railroad from the Wabash to the Norfolk and Western Railroads.

Lyle was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion, Randolph County Historical Society, Moberly Area Council on the Arts, NARVE, and was also active in helping with many community projects through the years.

He was especially proud of being a World War II veteran and constantly wore the cap he received when he went on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. with other veterans.

He married Carolee (Peitrich) Cross on August 1, 1972, in Las Vegas, NV, and she survives.  Also surviving are his children Diane Gideon  and partner Roger Bohn of Mt. Pulaski, IL; and three stepchildren,  Deborah Lee Schmidt and husband Alan of Lenexa, KS,  Paula Gaye Cross and husband John Arnold of Decatur, IL, Stephen Cross and partner Toni Blanton of Lenexa, KS, 11 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; a sister Janet Lawton and husband Dennis of Decatur, IL; sister-in-law Jeannine Hazlet of Decatur, IL; son-in-law John Kriescher of Montpelier, OH; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Linda Kriescher, and a brother Gene Hazlet.

Lyle was an avid golfer, belonging to the Moberly Country Club and NEMO Golf Association.  He thoroughly enjoyed trips to various golf courses and won several trophies.  He also enjoyed playing cards, goose hunting, and fishing trips with friends.
