LuVerne McCallister, 80, of Ottawa died March 24, 2011 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born April 13, 1930 in Williamsburg, Iowa to Frank and Gladys (Smakel) McCallister. He was a 1947 graduate of Williamsburg High School. He received a Bachelors Degree in Ceramic Engineering at Iowa State University in 1951. He served as a Lt. in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954 on the USS Douglas A. Munro, during the Korean Conflict. He was employed at Libby-Owens-Ford for 35 years, retiring as Superintendent of Plant 5. LuVerne married Joanne H. Dorman on February 6, 1955 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa. He was a 55 year member of First United Methodist Church of Ottawa where he served at various times as the Chairman of the Church Council, the Trustees and the Finance and Pastor Parish Committees. He served as a volunteer for the Ottawa Regional Hospital Care A – Van, president of the Kiwanis Golden K Club of Ottawa and served on the board of the Salvation Army. LuVerne is survived by his wife Joanne, one daughter, Lorraine McCallister, of Prophetstown, IL, one son, David (Loretta) McCallister, of Roselle, IL, 3 grandchildren, Madison, Francesa, and Trey, and his aunt, Dolores Hall, of Bristol, RI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Darlene, who died at birth. Pallbearers will be Charles Wolven, Matthew Mason, Dennis Day, David Neurohr and Steven and Michael Dorman.
