Luverne “Dutch” Darrell Nielsen, age 88, of Spencer, formerly of Sutherland, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was born on October 6, 1924, in Sutherland, Iowa, to Niels and Marie (McCosh) Nielsen. Dutch graduated from Sutherland High School in 1943, before serving his country in the United States Navy. Dutch worked for many years at Spencer Foods in the maintenance department and farmed. Dutch was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed spending his spare time watching football. Dutch had the ability to make people laugh, he could fix anything and had a natural green thumb. Dutch is survived by four daughters, Suzanne Lichner, Donna Du’Monceaux, Sherry (Terry) Cooper and Sandy (Randy) Pritts; three sons, Deryl (Gail) Nielsen, Dan (Eva) Nielsen and Chris (Judy) Nielsen; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Florence; brothers, Robert and Wayne; sister, LaVonne; son, Dale; son-in-law, Ted; great-grandson, Hunnar; and a grandson, Vance.
