Luther Ashby Brantley, Jr, a native of Southampton County for 86 years and a friend to many in the agricultural community passed away Saturday, June 22, 2024. He was the son of the late Luther Ashby Brantley, Sr and Rose Pulley Brantley. He was also predeceased by brothers, Lawrence Brantley and Dr. Aurelius Brantley and his son LA Brantley, III.Ashby had been actively farming 50 years when the decision was made to start logging and maintaining farms. Hand splitting firewood was an enjoyable activity for him into his early eighties. He was a man that always knew where he stood on any subject matter, and was willing to let you know. He had a wealth of county, state and world history knowledge gathered from hard work and a passion for reading. If you were fortunate enough to know him, and he liked you, he left a positive impression that would help you make better decisions. He would say “There are no curves in my road”; definitely a straight shooter. In his younger days he enjoyed participating in go kart and drag racing. He even won a few trophies. His uncle would often tell him to “calm it down a little.” Ashby said later, after he had outlived most of his cousins, “I must be a pretty good driver!” Friends and family lost a great man today. The family would like to thank Tom Alphin and Bryan Lowe for their love and dedication to Ashby.
