Lucile Fern (Schurr) Dahlberg age 99 years and 3 months went to meet her maker on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020 after a brief illness. Lucile was living at Ashley Manor Assisted Living Facility in Fort Lupton Colorado at the time of her death.
Lucile was born on a small farm near Victor in Mitchell County, Kansas on January 12, 1921 to Fredrich & Mable (Beatty) Schurr.
After several moves covering Lucile’s early years Lucile’s family settled in the Denver Colorado area. Lucile graduated from West High school in Denver in 1939. She furthered her education by taking and passing a mail order Accounting Class from a correspondence school out of Chicago, Illinois. Giving her a skill she would use the rest of her life.
Lucile followed her sister Viola to Washington D.C. in 1942 at the beginning of the U.S. involvement in WWII. They both got jobs for the War Department using their secretarial and accounting skills. They both worked in the pentagon while it was still under construction. After coming home for Christmas both Lucile and her sister decided not to return to D.C.. Lucile got a job at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, Colorado. She worked in the Motor Pool Department keeping track of vehicle inventories.
Lucile moved to a farm just outside of Fort Lupton Colorado in January of 1959. There she started Carl-Ayr Dairy Farm with some cows she got from her parents. That same year she joined the Purebred Dairy Cattle Board and the Colorado Ayrshires Breeders Association where she was the secretary/treasurer for 22 years. Lucile was also a member of the Pure Bred Dairy Youth Foundation for over 20 years. There she was able to work with Colorado’s youth and promote Dairy Cattle. Pure breed Ayrshire cattle and working with young people were two of her favorite things. Being in these organizations and others allowed her the opportunity to work with both. Lucile’s Ayrshire cattle earned several hundred ribbons and awards in the 19 years she had her dairy, more importantly so did the youth she worked with. Her cattle’s awards included “Best of Breed” and “Best of Show” for multiple years at the Colorado State Fair. They also won the title of “Top Milk Producing Ayrshire” in Colorado from the Colorado Ayrshire Breeders Association for several different cows.
Lucile was also active in the Colorado 4-H Program for many years. It started when she was a 4-H member enrolled in the Sewing Project. Her first project was a dress. It was up for Grand Champion, but lost because her hem was not quite right. Later she was a volunteer leader of both the Sewing and Dairy Projects, where she helped numerous children over the years.
In 1984 Lucile saw a need in her community. Lucile was one of the organizers of the Fort Lupton Food and Clothing Bank. She also helped organize the Christmas Basket Program in 1990. Lucile was the food coordinator and treasurer from 1984 to 2013.
In 1988 she was one of the Co-founders and a life time member of the Foxy Quilters Quilting Club. She was the group’s treasurer for 14 years. Lucile introduced the idea of making quilts for the Preston Ranch Ministries, a sanctuary for children that have been abused, neglected, orphaned or abandoned. And of course the Foxy Quilters were only too glad to do it!
Lucile also used her quilting skill to help the local Fort Lupton non-profit, Kidz Quiltz. Kidz Quiltz started making quilts for local children around 2006. Lucile was a member of the board as well as a volunteer. Lucile helped make hundreds of quilts and assist other volunteers with their quilting skills.
On May 6th 2007 Lucile was one of four inductees honored at the Fifteenth Annual Senior Hall of Fame Recognition which was put on by the Greeley Weld Senior Foundation.
Lucile was Grand Marshall for the Fort Lupton Trappers Day not once but twice!
Lucile was preceded in death by her parents Fredrich & Mable, husband Phillip, sisters Eula ‘Viola’ (Schurr) Rickard and Mable ‘Louise’ (Schurr) Bell, and brother LeRoy Schurr.
