Lucien Eugene Bernard “Lou,” passed away on March 31, 2021 at the age of 82 to
be home with the Lord. He was born at home in Sutton, Vermont on October 20,
1938. He was living in Maybell, Colorado at the time of his passing.
Growing up, Lucien loved sharing adventures with his 7 siblings. He was also
passionate about drawing from an early age. When he was 8, he drew a detailed
drawing of Jesus upon a front window of his Albany NY home that was so
beautiful people stopped to gaze upon it.
Lucien joined the U.S. Army in 1957. While stationed in North Carolina, he met his
wife, Phyllis Jackson, and they were married on December 6, 1958. They had 4
daughters: Pam, Karen, Crystal and Cheri.
In the military, Lucien was a Paratrooper in the 82 nd Airborne. Injured during a
jump, Lucien went on to the Vermont Military Academy to become a Captain in
the U.S. Army and later the Operating Engineers. He served 2 tours in Vietnam
with orphans.
After the military, Lucien did many things including owning his own coffee shop
and pizza shop. His passion for cooking became a major part of the rest of his life.
He went on to community college and received his Chef’s certification. He also
enjoyed country western dancing and even taught his daughters how to two-step
for their father daughter dance at their weddings.
Lucien found real purpose for life when he was introduced to Jesus Christ. His
passion for Jesus became his entire life. Lucien moved to Kodiak, Alaska where he
worked for the Kodiak Baptist Mission. What was to be a short trip became home
to him for the next 25 years. His time began as a chef for the other volunteers
Saturday breakfast for anyone on the Island. Every Saturday, locals would come to
the pavilion for breakfast.
He went on to begin serving those who struggled with addictions of all kinds. He
created the Lion Tamers and Celebrate Recovery in Kodiak. His desire to help
people who struggled with alcoholic and drug addictions was a passion until he
passed. He saved so many souls from addictions and brought these same people
to the foot of the cross of Jesus. This passion is the legacy that he leaves behind.
Lucien is preceded in death by his parents William and Lilieth Bernard, siblings:
Irene Morin Colbert, Sylvia Bernard, Leo Morin, Richard Bernard, and William
Bernard.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Phyllis Goodwin, sister Jackie
Williams of Little River SC, and brother, David Bernard also of Little River, SC, and
four daughters: Pamela Vert of Roseville CA, Karen Becker of Calimesa CA, Crystal
Mayo of Yucaipa, CA, and Cheri Strong of Maybell, CO.
He also leaves a legacy of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grandchildren:
Christopher Shaw, Derek Becker, Kaitlin Wagner, Macy Dortch, Toby Becker, Carly
Wagner and Kevin Wagner. Great-Grandchildren: Cash Becker, Memphis Becker,
Eve’ah Rogers and Jacorey Rogers.
scatter his ashes into the sea of his beloved island. There will also be a presenting
program on Kodiak Island.
