Lucerne Bettencourt

Long-time resident of Orange, CA, Lucerne Bettencourt, passed away in her home on January 28th.  Lu, as she was fondly known, lived a life where she gave of herself freely and was loved in the community. She was a registered nurse and for many years worked at St. Joseph’s in the city of Orange.  In the early days of nursing, she was instrumental in making changes that benefited her sister nurses, such as wearing pants.  Part of Lucerne’s nursing career was spent as a nurse epidemiologist where she was the first appointed to this role.  During the Korean War she worked as a RN at Fort Ord in California.  Lucerne was a kind person who had the ability to touch the lives of those around her.  She was a good listener, and others often sought her advice and guidance.  Lucerne was an avid reader with a keen mind and a quick wit.  You could always count on her to give you a smile; all the way to a belly laugh.  Lucerne was actively involved in her children’s lives and always cheered the loudest.  She and her husband Jack shared a love story for nearly 70 years.  Lucerne is survived by her loving husband Jack Bettencourt, her 4 children, Greg, Roxann, Teresa and Bill.  Lu had 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.  She will be missed and thought of lovingly.
