On December 17th, Samuel Whittingham Lockerman passed from this life. At 87 years, his life was full of many varied experiences. He was born and raised an only child in Wilmington, Delaware. A child of the depression, he pinched the maximum amount out of pennies and lived, an avid spectator, through World War II. That early childhood shaped much of his outlook for life. In 1950, he graduated from his beloved college, the USMA at West Point. With that polishing, he had set his life’s course, 28 years of service to his country in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He, and his beloved Barbara, had 7 children and faced, together many of life’s challenges. Separately, they faced many challenges, as well. He volunteered to serve in the Vietnam War and left his wife and 7 children to serve our country. His dedicated service won him the Bronze star and other awards. In 1971, after many years of work, he received a master’s degree in political science from the University of Oklahoma. Though he retired in 1978 from military service, he continued to push for excellence in his life. He wrote and self-published 5 novels and many military-related short stories. Though not a businessman, he created Castles Unique, and was designer, producer, marketer, and salesman of authentically reproduced medieval castles. A lifelong interest and talent in music, particularly 40’s and 50’s jazz and Broadway involved him in choirs and singing groups, including the choir at West Point. Singing, for him, was rejoicing in life. He explored and photographed much of the world. He worked hard to maintain physical health and strength all his life and was an avid football fan. Family was very important to him and he made much effort throughout his life to instill those values in his own family. He is survived by his 7 children, 12 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Poppa Sam, you will be greatly missed by those who love you and have learned so much from your example!
