An avid photographer, organic gardener, and nature enthusiast Louise (Atkins) Krueger, age 88, completed her life the way she lived it. Peacefully and gently, she passed away in her sleep in the early morning on March 11, 2022.
This quiet, kind and gentle, unassuming woman was born the only girl and the youngest of eight children in Taswell, IN on November 30, 1933, where she spent her childhood years galavanting on the family farm.
As an adult she showed her love of nature through hiking, scuba diving and snorkeling in Florida and sharing her favorite nature reserves, parks, zoos, and arboretums with her grandchildren. Whether she was heralding the children across suspended wood and rope bridges high in the canopy above the forest floor or trekking across the Floridian swamps in search of the local monkeys, alligators, and birds, Louise was a fount of knowledge that she willingly shared with anyone who wanted to listen.
Louise often looked at life through the eyes of a camera. She had a great affinity for seeing the uniqueness of everyday events and spent her young adult years as a photographer for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. After moving to California’s Silicon Valley, she met her husband Bill square dancing—Do-Si-Do-ing and Promenading their way into marriage in Reno, NV on January 10, 1970. A devoted and loving mother to two small boys, Louise moved with the family to San Diego where they lived for nearly a decade before relocating to Minnesota’s icy climes for Bill’s work.
Five years later, she and Bill moved back to sunny California before finally retiring to Sarasota, FL where Bill tragically succumbed to cancer. Louise spent most of her retirement concentrating on her garden, exploring Florida with a bicycling group, and helping the elderly with daily living skills and exercises to protect against falls and injury. Her last years in Florida were spent caring for her brother helping him recover from a stroke. After his eventual passing, Louise moved to Lafayette, IN where she spent the final years of her life with her brother James.
Lousie was the proud mother of two sons, Alan and Brian, and loving grandmother of 6 grandchildren: Alex, Liam, Laura, Avery, Matthew, and Nicholas.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Willam Loyal Krueger; her parents, Ivan “Wils” Atkins and Esther (Dearborn) Atkins; brothers, Maurice, Edward, Melvin, and Darwin; and 2 grandsons.
She is survived by her doting brothers, James, Ollie, and Ivan Atkins; her sons, Alan and Brian Krueger; and 6 grandchildren.
