Louise “Irene” Blanche Carty was born on April 14, 1910 in Clarendon Jamaica to the late John McLean and Elizabeth Lindsay.
“Irene’s mother died when she was eight years old and that changed her life completely. Due to her mother’s passing Irene’s schooling was limited, but she was very ambitious. However, she was educated about God. Everyday started with morning prayer and every night her father gathered everyone around a big table for prayer and Bible studies.
Irene was a farmer, nurse, mid wife, and a dress maker. She was proficient and gifted at each of these jobs.
Miss Irene, as she was known in the community, married Mr. Hezikiah Carty in 1940. They were blessed to raise eight children. The morning prayer and evening bible studies continued in her own home as a new wife and mother.
Miss Irene was a stern, disciplined, loving, giving, sympathetic and empathetic mother. If people came in from other areas she was known to pack baskets and bags of food to send with them or to give away. If there was a major disaster in the area or anyone was sick or a baby being born Miss Irene was the one to call. Many nights she went out after dark with only a torch to light her way and sometimes didn’t return until morning to care for the sick. One uncle in particular was so grateful for her excellent and gentle nursing care that he laid hands on her and blessed her, her children and grandchildren even unto the third and fourth generation. Her children say they were not rich with a lot of money, but were blessed with faith, family and love.
Miss Irene loved to dress! She was hailed in the community a snazzy dresser, with shoes and gloves all to match. She was even known to get dressed in her heels and best dress and work in her flower garden before leaving home. She was truly unique.
Miss. Irene was a big believer in the village raising a child and did her part in the community correcting chastising and loving the neighborhood children. Many of those children say with gratitude today that they are who they are because of Miss Irene.
Miss Irene went to be with the Lord on August 6, 2017 after 107 years on this earth. She was preceded in death by her sons Rudalph and Rhodes.
