Louise Ethel Layton, Sr., a retired teacher, died on November 1st of natural causes at her daughter’s home in North Carolina. The longtime Ferndale resident was 95.
The beloved daughter of Frank Phillip Schmidt, fabricator at U.S. Steel, and Ethel Mae Schmidt, Civic Leader, Louise Ethel Schmidt was born in Baltimore on January 6, 1916. She moved to Ferndale at age seven, graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1933 and attended Towson State University. She married Frank McShane Layton in 1935, who preceded her in death in 1982.
She worked as a teacher at Ferndale, George T. Cromwell and Brooklyn Park Elementary Schools until her retirement in 1980. She is survived by two children, Frank McShane Layton, Jr., and wife Debera and Louise Ethel Layton, Jr., and husband Gregory Floyd; her son-in-law T. Gordon Fitzhugh and daughter-in-law Dorothy Fitzhugh; her beloved daughter, Darby Patricia Fitzhugh, preceded her in death in 1988.
She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jay Gordon Fitzhugh, Gregg Layton Fitzhugh, Laurie Patricia Fangmann, Nicole Patricia Layton, Frank McShane Layton, III, and Edward Richard Layton; seven great-grandchildren, Austin Kyle Fitzhugh, Jacob Scott Fitzhugh, Thomas William Fitzhugh, Bethany Paige Fitzhugh, Sarah Louise Fitzhugh, Patrick John Fangmann, and Connor Thomas Fangmann; and a great-great-grandson, Javan Fitzhugh.
