Louis Walter “Walt” Alexander, 96, of St. Augustine and formerly of Palatka, passed from this life on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at Flagler Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Springfield, Illinois to Louis Alexander and Anna Sartori Alexander, he graduated from Gillespie Community High School on May 28th, 1943. He was quite busy in high school with 4 Square, Latin, Model Airplane, Honor Society, Football, track, band, and Athletic Association President in addition to other officer positions. (Legend has it that he intercepted a pass in the end zone and ran it back 102 yards for a touchdown).

Walt entered the US Navy on July 22, 1944, and served onboard the Destroyer Escort and the USS Whitehurst. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 9, 1946. Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended the University of Illinois and graduated on June 18, 1950, with his BA Degree in Industrial Engineering. Later that month, he began what would be a forty-year career with the same company, Central States Diversified.

He began in St. Louis, MO, and transferred to Palatka in 1956. He was very active in Little League baseball in the early days as a coach. He joined the Azalea City Kiwanis Club in 1958 and served as president in 1962. In 1992-93, Walt served as Lt. Governor for Division 18 of the Florida District of Kiwanis where he mentored clubs in his division. After retirement, he spent time volunteering, spending time with his wife Barbara as well as his family.

Walt had three children, Jimmy, Keith, and Lynne and was blessed with four grandchildren, Joshua, Jeremy, Gary, and Leslie. Additionally, he was a blessing to his ten great-grandchildren, Clayton, Tucker, Ivey, Saylor, Logan, Gavin, Liam, Olivia, Maverick, and Knight.
